Fort Zumwalt School District is a trauma-informed school district. In this episode of FORTiTUDE, Dr. Jerry Cox, a consulting psychologist with FZSD for 27 years, and Dr. Dede McCullough, Executive Director for Behavioral Support Services, explain how this initiative came to be and how the district meets the needs of students and staff through this process.

Creating trauma-informed schools helps our staff and our community understand the prevalence of trauma in our children, the impact that it has on the development of the brain and on a child’s availability to learn.

“It’s best practices,” Dr. Cox says. “It’s what we do to help all kids learn better, and all teachers teach better and all parents to feel more connected to the school community.”
